It doesn't surprise me that you forged a connection in your travels, Melanie. Sign of a good writer, I'd say. And your photos, lovely as always, really give me a sense of place.

Beautiful story, Melanie. Cancer forges an instant connection, doesn't it? The photos are just exquisite, as are the details of the hotel.

I loved learning about this hotel and the couple behind it. Thanks for sharing!

What a beautiful story. It's the personal connections that I make while traveling that mean the most, no matter what the common denominator (cancer for you and Debbie) happens to be.

What a great post! Your connection certainly came through and the emotion reverberated in every word.

I really wish I could visit this hotel. Being in the hospitality industry myself, I know how innkeepers can pour themselves into an enterprise and it certainly shows here. Debbie's reluctance to return to Canada makes so much sense to me. I can imagine a time when my husband, who is 9 years older, will no longer be here, and I will wander the grounds, saying to myself, we did this and this and this together ….

Lovely story. There are so many poignant tales out there, when you start to look.

I must say, I'd rather stay at a place with a little history then at a chain hotel. Thanks for sharing this story.

What a beautiful place and a beautifully poignant story. It comes at a time when my husband and I are pondering exactly what we'll do post-retirement. I hope we'll have our passion figured out by then, and be able to follow it with such energy.

What a beautiful story! This would make a great profile for a magazine, and the colorful photos really complement this piece.

It's so true how we can find connections (and, of course, stories) anywhere in the world if we're just open to seeing them. Lovely post, and the photos are so vibrant and beautiful.

It looks like he did well with that dream. I think it would be hard for me to walk away from that, even after his death. It was such a part of him.

I'm so sad that her husband died of cancer. It looks like he really built his dream (as others have said, your photos are lovely) and now he's no longer here to enjoy it.
