oh….I can well imagine how moving that must have been. All that love and hope collected in one place – so powerful.

I've not been to Chimayo, but I have spent a good bit of time in the Taos area and on Taos Pueblo. Northern New Mexico is a powerfully spiritual place in many different ways.

Appreciate your recommendation of the St.Francis Hotel and its contemplative feeling, also.

Lovely post. We visited Lourdes a few years ago and were similarly moved by people's longing and faith.

You folks are right; I was afraid of sounding too New Agey, but yes, Chimayó and the whole surrounding valley, which is filled with Tewa artisans, especially weavers, is very spiritual. I'd love to go back and explore at greater length; I was just there for one day.

What a moving place this must be! Anything that gives people this kind of hope and a safe haven is indeed a special sanctuary from the harsh realities of life.

I was totally charmed by Chimayo, but I am somewhat ashamed to admit that I did not go for the spiritual experience. I was shopping. The generations of families who do exquisite weaving drew me there.

I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was quite moved by my visit to Chimayó, and loved Santa Fe and Taos as well. If you have a chance to go to New Mexico, take it! It really feels quite exotic, yet it's only a short plane ride away.

Wow – you were only there for a day? The impact Chimayo had on you really comes through in this piece.
