It’s finally possible to stay in central Loreto — right on the Malecon, mind you — in a hotel worthy of this gorgeous city. La Mision Loreto, which just opened this winter, takes full advantage of its gorgeous setting. Every room overlooks a tranquil courtyard and the island-studded bay beyond, while from the halls and walkways you can see the historic mission that gives the hotel its name. Of course, the timing of the opening is not great, with the economy of the Loreto area in full free-fall, thanks to overbuilding of gringo-enticing condo communities. But all that means is, go now. When I was there, they were still ironing out a few kinks — I had to change rooms to get working wi-fi, for example. But the design is top-notch, the linens were luxurious, and the restaurant’s swanky specials were more “California cuisine” than we have here at home. It’s the perfect time for budget travelers with high-end tastes to go before occupancy rates outpace discounts.
